The 3R Model Applied to Product Design (#16)

Horm Stories #16

Today, we want to tell you about an example of circular economy applied to product design by Casamania, Horm’s sister brand dedicated to hospitality and workspace furniture.

Circular and linear economies differ in the way value is created or maintained. The linear economy traditionally follows the path: take > produce > dispose. This means raw materials are extracted or collected, then transformed into products that are used until they are discarded as waste. A circular economy, on the other hand, follows the 3R approach:

  • reduce;
  • reuse;
  • recycle.

Raw material use is minimized, the reuse of products or their components is maximized, and finally, raw materials are recycled according to the highest standards.

The 3R model is influencing all production and creative sectors: a green-thinking concept with the explicit goals of raising consumer awareness about conscious resource use, preventing waste, and preserving natural resources.

Horm and Casamania have always believed in responsible resource management and in reuse & recycling as opportunities to reduce environmental impact and contribute to the enrichment of both local and global communities. Within this perspective is the RememberMe chair and table project, created by Casamania in collaboration with designer Tobias Juretzek, co-founder of Studio Nito.

RememberMe is an industrial project in which the drive toward the future and the desire to keep the past alive coexist, giving each other meaning and strength. This project, embodying current sustainability themes, gives new life to old clothing that unknowingly but profoundly carries memories.

Jeans and T-shirts, either supplied by clients or discarded by manufacturers, are used as materials to produce bistro chairs and tables. A patented mold by Casamania serves as the vehicle through which the garments are combined with a slim metal frame and a special hardening resin, creating a unique, solid structure composed of the most intimate and emotional memories.

Once again, the creativity of the designers and Horm’s ingenious, cohesive team has amazed us. Through out-of-the-box thinking, our company has been able to create a product that is truly unique and innovative.
