Folding Wood Sheets Like Origami (#26)

Horm Stories #26

Last week, we took part in a conference focused on innovation in materials used within the furniture industry. During the event, it became clear how these material innovations have revolutionized the design and production process, offering new ways to rethink form, function, and sustainability. It was an opportunity to explore the concept of creativity as the ability to create without limits, made possible by the essential support of technology.

The importance of research and development is evident in a world where technological and social evolution constantly challenges designers to stay ahead, pushing them to discover solutions that meet the changing needs of the market.

Horm has fully embraced this principle, inventing and patenting “Origami Wood,” a groundbreaking technological innovation born from its collaboration with visionary architect Steven Holl — a world-renowned figure in contemporary architecture — who designed for Horm a collection of furniture pieces distinguished by their sculptural and poetic design language.

This unique material consists of an extremely durable technical fabric, laminated on both sides with Canaletto walnut or ebony veneer to create ultra-thin wooden sheets just 2.2 mm thick. These sheets are laser-etched with delicate incisions that allow the veneer to bend like a sheet of paper, while the internal fabric core provides the flexibility necessary to fold the wood. In essence, Horm has invented a wood that can be shaped like origami, giving designers the freedom to sculpt volumes and geometries previously unimaginable with traditional woodworking techniques.

In the Riddled Collection designed by Steven Holl, the table, buffet, and chandelier all share this innovative approach, made from thin sheets of perforated Origami Wood following a decorative pattern conceived by the architect himself. These perforations allow light to pass through, creating a mesmerizing play of shadows and reflections that animates the surrounding space with a sense of depth and mystery.

The Riddled Table, with its legs crafted from ultra-thin folded wood sheets, represents a true challenge to the laws of physics. These sculptural, origami-like supports allow internal light to filter through, projecting an interplay of light and shadow that transforms the object into a luminous sculpture.

The Riddled Buffet and Riddled Totem are equally striking — true works of art composed of an aluminum structure combined with Origami Wood. The result is a faceted, sculptural piece that is both lightweight and luminous, much like a diamond reflecting light through its many surfaces.

The Not Riddled sideboard exemplifies refined elegance — more than just a functional furniture piece, it stands as a statement of contemporary design, perfectly balancing aesthetic grace and technological innovation.

Finally, the Plywood Chandelier completes the collection: an elegant pendant lamp where LED light filters through the perforated wood, projecting intricate shadow patterns that transform the atmosphere of any interior.

Once again, Horm demonstrates how passion and the willingness to think outside the box can lead to new, groundbreaking paths in design — where innovation, art, and craftsmanship converge to redefine the boundaries of what is possible.
