Rattan: An Ancient and Enduring Material (#10)

Horm Stories #10

Today, we invite you on a journey through the rolling hills lined with vineyards typical of the Treviso countryside, to discover a product that has long represented Venetian artisanal excellence: rattan, a natural fiber originally imported from the Indies.
The final product, known as midollino, is obtained from the extraction of this fiber—from the rattan plant, a type of climbing palm. The term “midollino” refers to the fact that it comes from the inner core of the plant, its pith.

In Italy, the use of this material became widespread especially after World War II and during the 1970s, when these fibers began to be treated with substances that improved their durability. Even today, midollino is widely used due to its remarkable flexibility, lightness, and eco-sustainability. Choosing furniture made of midollino means not only selecting a unique piece, but also embracing a product deeply connected to natural heritage.

This very connection to the green economy led Horm to select midollino for some of the most enduring pieces in its collection: the Bar Stool, the Sin Chair, and the Charlotte Armchair. Characterized by essential and timeless designs, these pieces are ideal for any setting, whether it’s a penthouse terrace with panoramic views or the outdoor area of a restaurant with a pool.

Once again, the expertise of Horm artisans has achieved its goal: revitalizing a highly significant traditional craft while giving it a contemporary reinterpretation, creating pieces that are both sustainable and aesthetically timeless.
