Horm Stories #30
Today, we take you to Riga, Latvia, one of Europe’s greenest countries, where approximately 54% of the territory is covered by forests. In particular, we want to highlight the architecture of the Academic Center of Natural Sciences, part of the University of Latvia, the country’s most prestigious academic hub, founded shortly after Latvia’s independence in 1918.
In a nation so attentive to the preservation of natural habitats, the architecture of the Center is a true ode to nature and sustainability. Designed by the architects at Sestais Stils, the building places environmental sustainability at the forefront. Its double green façade, composed of living plants, not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the structure but also serves a practical function: regulating indoor temperature, preventing summer overheating, and protecting against harsh winter conditions. In addition, the Center employs multiple renewable energy sources, including rooftop photovoltaic panels and wind generators.
The interior spaces are defined by a wide range of modern facilities: advanced laboratories, digital libraries, individual and collaborative workspaces, and auditoriums for conferences and seminars. Recreational areas, such as patios and atriums, foster social interaction and collaboration among students and researchers.
Within this context, the Ben Grimm modular sofa by Casamania, designed by the talented Luca Nichetto, fits perfectly. Its versatility and contemporary design harmonize seamlessly with the corridors and common areas of the complex, providing spaces for informal meetings, idea exchange, and moments of relaxation.
Once again, Casamania furniture demonstrates its ability to adapt and enrich even the most prestigious environments, adding tangible value to the communal spaces of this renowned academic center.
