Horm Stories #09
Today, we want to talk about one of Horm’s defining qualities: the ability to forge special relationships with some of the world’s leading architects, resulting in products that convey the philosophy and vision that have made these architects true “starchitects.”
One of these luminaries is Steven Holl, among the most renowned and influential contemporary architects and theorists. His architecture is “thinking architecture,” connecting with various forms of art and exploring the anthropological aspects of modern society, with a central focus on the interplay of structure, light, and materials.
Capturing natural light and creatively integrating it into spatial elements is one of Holl’s primary objectives, alongside the use of golden ratio proportions and experimentation with innovative materials.
This philosophy, which permeates all of Holl’s projects—from the Linked Hybrid Housing Complex in Beijing to Simmons Hall at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts—is reflected in some of the most iconic pieces of Horm’s Riddled Collection:
- Riddled Tavolo
- Riddled Totem
- Riddled Buffet
- Plywood Chandelier
What unites these products is their combination of creativity and technological innovation. They are crafted from ultra-thin wooden sheets, just two millimeters thick, laser-engraved and folded like origami through a sophisticated, patented process unique to Horm, known as “industrial invention.”
Light filtering through the perforations of the pantographed structures creates shadow patterns that transform the surrounding environment, astonishing viewers like a true work of art.
In short, the Riddled Collection is a family of design pieces that allows Horm to bring the same emotional impact experienced in Steven Holl’s architecture—scaled down—to residential and domestic spaces.
