Dror Benshetrit and Humanity’s Impact on the Environment (#27)

Horm Stories #27

Did you know that the word design comes from the Latin pro jacere, meaning “to throw forward”? In other words, design is the art of being aware of the present while imagining a future where ideas take shape. Why am I telling you this? Because I want to share an inspiring story I recently read about Dror Benshetrit, a visionary New York–based designer whose mission is to revolutionize the world of production through a sustainable approach.

According to Dror, the only way to ensure a better future is to use natural resources responsibly, breaking away from the unsustainable cycle of building cities that compromise both our health and quality of life.

As part of his communication campaign to spread this philosophy, Dror conceived a sculpture in the shape of an armchair called Mass Pressure, which was brought to life by Horm. Initially created as a piece of art, Mass Pressure eventually evolved into one of the most admired armchairs in Horm’s collection.

Dror uses his creations as vehicles for change, giving them structural, emotional, and metaphorical impact. In this case, the way the armchair takes form — three foam blocks compressed to the limit by a steel frame — symbolizes the tremendous pressure that humanity exerts on the environment.

Horm embraced the designer’s vision by crafting a truly innovative and visually striking product. The Mass Pressure Limited Edition achieved its sculptural look through a collaboration between Horm and Novacolor, whose decorative finishes enhanced the chair’s sharp, geometric lines and expressive power.

Later, the sculpture transformed into a soft, welcoming, and functional piece, taking on the name and form of Mass Pressure Dressed — a comfortable armchair upholstered in elegant bouclé fabric.

Creating extraordinary and emotionally engaging designs is embedded in Horm’s DNA. Products like Mass Pressure Dressed offer a touch of exclusivity and artistic flair to any environment — whether it’s a residential space or a hospitality setting — reaffirming Horm’s commitment to design that inspires, provokes, and endures.
